Even though I have a drill press, I still needed the capability to drill perpendicular holes in projects either too large for my drill press or located outside of my shop. I was considering a drill guide from another company ($200) because of its ?¡± drill chuck but users reported that the ?¡± hex drive occasionally breaks. I chose the DrillMate because of its beefier designed 5/16¡± hex drive, metal components, and outstanding customer service. I contacted Milescraft on a Saturday, about upgrading to a ?¡± chuck, and received an email back from Brittany on Sunday. She confirmed that it uses a common style chuck and sent me a link to the correct 1/2’¡± chuck. With the addition of the ?¡± Jocobs chuck (#30598 $24.00), the DrillMate is by far the best option for my money.

I¡¯m stingy with handing out 5 stars¡ this one was close. The only thing that I noticed after assembling.. was the lack of lubrication on the guide rails, they are bare, and they clearly need some form of lubrication. It would be nice to include a little vial of the recommended lubrication type and an additional sheet of instructions on how/ where to apply said lube.Other than that.. what a steal this device is at under $40¡ compared to rockler or woodpeckers version, which can get insanely pricey, this unit is legit!I loved the integrated ¡°self centering¡± into the base.I don¡¯t love the spring so much. While it is necessary, I feel like you have to press down a little too much to get to where you are actually drilling into your piece. The spring could be improved.Overall, I¡¯d recommend this product even to my worst enemies ??

So glad I got this, works great! Highly recommend!

I like the handle but you can also clamp it down in the corners if you want. I would prefer the corners be a little bigger and flatter for clamping, but I can get a 12 inch Irwin Quick-Grip Clamp on there easily and it holds great so I can’t complain.I’ve only used it for drilling straight down so far but the way the angle guide works it should be accurate at angles. At the bottom of the upright tubes is a stair-step shaped piece of metal. When you turn the bars to lock into an angle, it pulls that piece of metal up into the bottom of the base which is also stair-stepped. It holds solid but I think it will prevent you from using it at any angle that’s not printed on the side. Generally not an issue unless you drill a lot of weird angles. The only real improvement I can think of is there should be something to hold the chuck key.

Bought this to drill dog holes in workbench. Worked great and gave nice straight holes

  6. Alex Crumley –

It worked great! It was a little bulky and a little expensive. But it fit the drill great and once you got it set up worked very quick. We bought it to run cable wiring through a deck. Definitely would buy again.

I needed to drill a series of 3/4″ holes for bench dogs and after some freehand tries, I realized I needed a drill guide. Since I liked the Milescraft drill block, the drill guide was at the top of my list. I wasn’t disappointed! The guide worked like a dream and each of the holes was dead straight, with almost no wobble. Operation out of the box wasn’t as smooth as I wanted, but a quick coating of wax on the rods fixed that. The stop block worked well and stayed consistent throughout all the holes, stopping the drill so only the brad point of the bit made it through to the other side. I then flipped the top over and used that small hole to complete the task from the other side without splitting the wood. I then used it for a few 45-degree holes in the legs, which worked well, too. It’s not as steady as a true drill press, but it was more than steady enough for my needs. The only real downside I’ve noticed was that it would be nice to have a keyless chuck in the guide, but it’s not a deal breaker for me. It’s a great tool for the price!

Used to drill holes in 1 1/4 black iron for longer extensions on my support stands for when I have my vehicles on the lift, worked great

  9. twalker011 –

Looks great. Will put it to good use.

Works very well. Built in chuck reduces drill bit sway. Two guide rods keeps drilling on track. I got best results by building wooden jigs to level work pieces and to hold them in place.
